My designs draw upon the knowledge gained from surfing an immense variety of waves around the world.
Cronulla Point, Shark Island, Voodoo and NSW South Coast...
The designs originated in the thick Cronulla reef breaks of Shark Island, Voodoo and Cronulla Point as well as the nearby powerful reefs of the NSW south coast. These were waves that allowed very little room for error.
Indonesia and Hawaii....
Subsequent trips to the long barrels of Indonesia and and huge waves of Hawaii further developed my design's abilities to race long walls, paddle into and take steep drops and weave through deep, winding barrels.
Brazil, Tokyo, South Africa, USA East & West Coast, Queensland and Northern NSW...
A detour through the poor quality waves of the late 70's pro tour introduced me to the challenges of surfing smaller and softer waves like the tiny and often soft beachbreaks of places like Brazil, USA east coast and Tokyo. Moving to Qld and northern NSW in the late 80's further reinforced the importance of a board's ability to be able to cope with less powerful waves.
Back to Indo, South Pacific, Australia's North West desert...
Throughout the 80’s and 90’s I hit the road with quivers of boards to remote corners of Indonesia, Australia’s North West desert and the Pacific. These trips to some of the world’s most challenging waves in some of the world’s remotest regions meant that I needed boards that I could depend on to pull myself through situations where sometimes my very life was on the line.
Grajagan, Cloudbreak, Desert Point, Outside Corner Uluwatu...
It was these trips to now legendary waves such as Grajagan, Cloudbreak, Desert Point, Outside Corner Uluwatu, Gnarloo, Nihiwatu that led to further refinement and development of designs for serious waves.
These Days...
I'm still out there dragging surfboards through airports and off to remote corners of the world where I can peacefully explore the potentials and limitations of surfboard designs. On the right wave I often learn more on that one wave than I do in 6 months of slogging away in the shaping bay.
